Quick Plot Description:
Marsha Mitchell (Ginger Rogers), a traveling dress model on vacation, stops in the Southern town to see her sister, Lucy Rice (Doris Day), who has recently married Ku Klux Klansman, Hank Rice (Steve Cochran). Within minutes of arriving in town, Marsha secretly witnesses a drunken KKK mob, killing a man with a shotgun. Two members of the mob, remove their hoods and Marsha gets a good look at them. After the mob quickly leaves the scene, Marsha finds her sister and learns that one of the men is Hank, her sister's husband.
Hank claims that it was an accident, and Lucy forgives her husband. Then Hank desperately tries to persuade Marsha to keep her mouth shut for the sake of his life and his marriage to her sister, who is pregnant. While Marsha, still views Hank as a vile person, she reluctantly agrees to leave town and "forget" about the incident.
District Attorney Burt Rainey (Ronald Reagan) arrives in town that night and starts and investigation...
Marsha quickly finds herself confronted by constant pressure from all sides, and is faced with two decisions...
Should she tell the truth to satisfy her conscience and do the right thing? ...or... should she lie to maintain her sister's happiness, whom she loves very much?
