MY Quick DVD Review...
I purchased my DVD copy from Amazon on Amazon.com on January 19, 2017, and I received the set in the mail two days later.
The first episode I chose to watch, which I couldn't wait to see...of course... was the episode Miss Ginger Rogers starred in.
When I selected the episode "The Critical Success/...", the DVD presented me with a sub menu asking me if I wanted to see the Promo for the episode or to skip the Promo. I chose to watch the Promo... and I suggest that everyone should watch it too. It was a little bit more special than most of the promos that are included...
The video quality and audio of the episode is very good considering this episode was made 37+ years ago... and just to be clear, none of the episodes have been restored. There are typical issues involving 37 year old media, but they are relatively minor. It is one of the best looking episodes in the set, and, it still looks great on DVD!
I don't want to spoil the episode for anyone who has not seen it yet... so I'll just give you a quick review...
It has been years since I saw any Love Boat episodes, and I had forgotten how humorous the show format was supposed to be, which also includes a laugh track on every episode. Seeing the crew, constantly being part of the jokes, was a bit of a shock to me. I guess the show should have been called the "Comedy Boat". In any case, it made watching the episode even more fun... (Thankfully, Ginger didn't have an encounter with "Flying Butter"...)
I did expect to see numerous famous guest stars on the passenger list, and had read about some of the ones who took the cruise with Ginger, but there were a couple of additional ones that I wasn't prepared for, but instantly recognized while watching the episode. Seeing them all was very entertaining.
The episode wasn't all perfect. I did think there were a few jokes or some situations which seemed ridiculous... But, at least none of that stuff involved Ginger's scenes. Ginger's sub-story in the episode was top notch.
I purchased both Season 3 Volumes on DVD and have almost watched them all. After comparing them... I think Ginger's episode is one of the very best of Season 3. I would rate this Love Boat episode an 8/10.
There Appears To Be An Editing Error In The Episode:
The Promo advertised a scene, involving another sub-story, which shows Larry Linville (Frank Burns from M*A*S*H) getting shocked by a lamp. I watched the episode a second time, and when I saw the promo again, I realized this scene appears to me, to be missing from the episode. I searched through the episode back and forth, and I could NOT find this scene. ODD...
As for Miss Ginger Rogers... She was Beautiful and Magnificent as always, and indeed "Sparkled" in this two-part episode.
Even if Ginger's episode was the only one on the DVD, I feel that spending $19.96+ on this DVD set, was worth the price of purchase, at least for me, just to be able to add her wonderful performance in this episode, to my Ginger Rogers media collection...
But... There are still MANY more Love Boat episodes that are also included to enjoy too!
If you are a fan of the majority of Miss Ginger Rogers' performances, I don't believe you will regret adding this DVD to your collection...
Even with the editing error I mentioned... I never got any indication that any of Ginger's sub-story was incomplete.
